Bark Cloth Making バーククロス作り見学

Have you heard about "bark cloth"?

バーククロスというのがウガンダには昔からあります。

It is a cloth made by removing the bark from Ficus Natalensis tree!

イチジクの仲間の木の皮で作られた布なのです！

This is UNESCO's intangible heritage!

なんと、ユネスコの無形文化遺産。

It is used in ceremony, such as a coronation, funeral and so on.

People even used to wrap a budy when they bury.

Some people use the cloth as bed sheet.

王様が戴冠式にこれを着たり、葬式で遺体をくるんで埋めたり、

厳かな儀式に使われた布です。

今でも、ベッドシーツとして使っている人もいるそう。

（わたしの同僚は昔使っていたらしい）

I am very interested in this cloth, therefore I went to see how they are making.

どうしてもこの布の作り方とか知りたくて、

職人ムサンザさんのところへ日曜日に見学に行ってきました。

The process was very simple!!

作り方はめっちゃ簡単。

Remove the tree bark of Ficus Natalensis.

There are other species for bark cloth, but Natalensis is the most common tree for this cloth.

It usually grows at the edge of the forest.

木の皮をはぎ取ります。

Ficus Natalensisという木を使うのが一般的だそうです。

このNatalensisは森の境界線によく生えてくる木です。

Remove the top layer and just beat beat beat until it got expanded.

One day is enough to make like the cloth up-right in the picture.

ただひたすら、このはがした皮を木製のハンマーで打って伸ばす。

一日もあれば写真右上のような布を作れるんだって。

The most amazing thing is that this tree reproduce the bark in short period!

My original thought was that the tree is finished after it was removed the bark because it is the most important part of tree which has vascular bundle, however,,,it reproduce!

As you can see, there are 6 layers. Each layer grow in 3 months!

So, Mr. Musanza (the bark cloth maker) told me that when he removes the bark, he remove just half of the bark alternately in every 3 months, so that he could make continuously.

このバーククロスづくりの一連のプロセスで面白いのは、

なんとこの樹皮ををはがされた部分が再生するということ！

知床のキハダがこんなことされたらとっくに死んでしまうのに、

この木はなんと樹皮を再生します。しかも３ヶ月で。

なので、写真を見てもらうと６層に分かれていますが、

一層あたり３ヶ月で形成されたものなんだって！

だかた、この職人ムサンザおじさんは、樹皮をはがすとき、

半分ずつ３ヶ月おきにかわりばんこに使っているそうです。

Sustainable!!

３ヶ月、ここに住んで再生の様子を観察したいなあ。

I tried beating!

Musanza told me that he usually enjoys Banana wine while beating the cloth.

This is pass off on from his father.

He is just amazing, funny cloth maker!

かなぺも打ってみました。

職人ムサンザおじさんはひょうたんに入ったバナナ酒を片手に、

いつも布を作っているんだとか。

酒がないとできないの？って聞いたら

「先代もこうやっていたからね」って。

なんかいいねえ。こういうの。




I've already made some products and tried selling at the market,
but the sales wasn't good than i expected...
おっしゃ、これで何かつくるぞと思って作って、
このまえのケニアの会議で売ってみたんだけど、、

値段設定が高くて売れなかったとさ。笑
